| Rings :: Gold Column
Solid 18kt yellow gold ring with column design, matte finish. Sizes
5-10. (7107144)
This ring represents an Ionian column copied from the façade
of the Imperial Palace built in 1843 by the Brazilian Emperor Pedro
II in Petropolis, his summer retreat near Rio de Janeiro.
When the royal court fled from Portugal to escape Napoleon, it brought
with it the taste of the times in Europe which was “Empire”,
popularized by Napoleon’s vision of himself as an heir to
the Roman Empire. This was imitated by the King of Portugal, who
proclaimed himself Emperor of Brazil.
It was under the second emperor, Pedro, that Brazil flourished politically,
economically and culturally.
This is from a collection bought from H. Stern Jewellers.
